Cupcake Race

August 22, 2009

Between seeing the film and reading the book, Julie & Julia has done it. Like really, really done it.  It’s inspired me. The whole “do something for yourself, think outside of the box, find joy where you’ve never found it before”…that stuff. It’s that stuff, along with my initial inspiration to teach myself how to bake cupcakes and my discovery of other bloggers and their inspirational cupcaking ideas that has led to my new and exciting challenge.

In the past few months, I have researched and brainstormed numerous cupcake flavours and flavour combinations (51 to be exact). In that time, however, I have only baked 14 of my different cupcakes. That’s a lot of flavours left over to experiment with and bake. Thus, as I venture through the 37+ recipe ideas that I have left to explore – all while trying to start my cupcake business – I thought that I’d speed things up a little and initiate a cupcake challenge for myself.

Yes, this idea is inspired by Julie Powell (obviously), but also by a recent blog that I came across, Beantown Baker . Check it out: Jen of Beantown Baker recently hosted Cupcake Week, 5 days, 5 cupcakes. It reminded me a lot of Julie Powell’s 365 days, 524 recipes, but mostly I just thought it was a great way to make several different kinds of cupcakes in a short period of time.

For my cupcake challenge, I won’t be making a new cupcake everyday (with the cost of ingredients and school getting revved up in the next couple of weeks, it would be difficult to find the time and money). However, I will baking one new cupcake every week. This isn’t much different than what I was doing this summer, although I figure with school and work, things might get a little hectic and I may be caught under pressure in the sweetest of moments. That said, it’s a challenge and I am going to take it head on.

Each week, I will surprise you, my readers, with a new and exciting cupcake à la Rubber Pants. For this week: well, that’s up to you to come back at the end of the week and see what delicious treat/s I’ve concocted for your visual pleasure. Stay tuned and happy cupcaking!
